Siemens Solar announces the next generation of higher power CIS modules

- Series production for CIS thin-film modules ST20
and ST40

Siemens Solar has announced the series production of its CIS solar modules ST20 (20 Wp) and ST40 (38 Wp). This will considerably increase the power range of CIS thin-film modules.

In 1998, Siemens Solar was the first company in the world to start series production of CIS modules. Thin-film technology based on CIS (Copper Indium DiSelenide) first appeared on the market in the form of a 5-Watt module (ST5) and 10-Watt module (ST10). These solar modules are particularly suitable for battery-charging systems with low power requirements.  Solar module ST20 is also ideally suited to this kind of application, e.g. in emergency telephones or telemetry systems.

Higher power modules – like the ST40 – are also used in grid-connected systems. The matt-black solar module, which is particularly homogeneous in appearance, opens up new horizons for architects and designers particularly in the field of facade systems. CIS technology can now be applied to ensure a level of area efficiency previously only attainable with crystalline solar modules.

Siemens CIS solar modules are remarkable for their high levels of efficiency and power stability, tested over an eight-year field trial conducted by the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL). Siemens Solar is closely involved in further developing CIS thin-film technology, with the aim of achieving the same level of efficiency of crystalline solar modules and high reliability at greatly reduced costs.

The latest research figures clearly show that Siemens Solar is on the right track with its CIS activities. A record efficiency of 14.2 % has been recorded with a 19 cm² lab sample by Fraunhofer Gesellschaft für Solare Energiesysteme in Freiburg.

Siemens Solar comprises Siemens Solar GmbH in Munich, a joint venture of Siemens AG and Bayernwerk AG, Siemens Solar Industries L.P. in Camarillo (CA) and two Joint Ventures: Siemens Showa Solar Ltd., Singapore, and Showa Solar Energy KK, Tokyo. Siemens Solar has to date supplied over 150 MW throughout the world, making it the leading company in the photovoltaics industry.
