Siemens Solar Completes 3-year
World Bank Training Program in India

CAMARILLO, Calif., December 21, 1998 -- Siemens Solar Industries (SSI) announced the successful completion of its three-year Solar Photovoltaic (SPV) Training Programme in India.  The SPV Programme was sponsored by the World Bank and the Swiss Development Co-operation and was coordinated by the Indian Renewable Energy Development Agency (IREDA).  The program was the first of its kind to train technicians and engineers on a nationwide basis in the design and installation of solar energy systems.

The intent of the program was to stimulate the market for solar photovoltaic systems, which convert sunlight directly into electricity.  These solar energy systems, primarily used for home lighting and agricultural water pumping, are ideally suited for the vast distributed rural populations of India, for whom reliable electricity is not readily available.

Instructors from Siemens Solar Industries taught practical skills to the program participants during the one to two-week classroom and installation sessions.  As a result of the program, over 775 engineers and technicians are fully qualified to install and service systems in the rapidly growing Indian domestic solar electric market.  Fifty solar professionals participated in the intensive System Design and Engineering courses each year, held in the prestigious Indian Institutes of Technology (IIT) in Madras, Bombay and Delhi.  Two hundred installers and technicians graduated each year from the Field Technician courses, held at the Central Electronics Centre (CEC) of the IIT Madras.

The successful IREDA/World Bank SPV Training Programme builds upon the 16 years of continuous worldwide technical training conducted by Siemens Solar, with training courses completed in over 26 countries since 1982.

SSI is part of the Siemens Solar Group, the world's leading manufacturer in the photovoltaic industry.  The Siemens Solar Group is comprised of Siemens Solar GmbH in Munich, Germany (a joint venture of Siemens AG and Bayernwerk AG); Siemens Solar Industries, a limited partnership in Camarillo, California; and two joint ventures, Siemens Showa Solar Ltd. in Singapore, and Showa Solar Energy K.K. in Tokyo, Japan.  For more information, contact Siemens Solar Industries (805-482-6800), Siemens Solar GmbH in Munich, Germany (49-89-636-59173), Siemens Showa Solar Pte.
