New Siemens Solar Modules Save U.S. Coast Guard Millions

CAMARILLO, Calif., October 21, 1997 -- Based on a recent study of marine power systems, Siemens Solar Industries (SSI) announced that the U.S. Coast Guard saves over $6 million in maintenance and disposal costs by using new Siemens Solar modules. The study analyzes a July 1997 award of a one year, $1 million dollar contract extension Siemens Solar received to supply the United States Coast Guard with solar photovoltaic (PV) modules.

The Coast Guard currently uses Siemens Solar marine modules in over 16,000 Aids to Navigation on inter-coastal waterways, rivers, lakes, and along both the Atlantic and Pacific Coasts.

The Coast Guard, through a competitive bidding process, chose Siemens Solar to supply marine modules for the tenth consecutive year. Most of the new Siemens Solar modules are used to generate electricity for battery charging in the Coast Guard's Aid to Navigation buoys. Careful matching of the custom module's performance to specific system requirements enables the Coast Guard to extend the buoys' battery life and save an estimated $6 million over the useful life of the systems. The rest of the modules supplied under the new contract are being used to retrofit existing lighthouses that are powered by underwater cables.

Siemens Solar provides three separate modules to meet the Coast Guard's precise requirements— MAR10 (10 watts, 16" x 16" module), the MAR20 (20 watts, 22" x 22" module), and the MAR35 (35 watts, 28" x 28" module). Siemens Solar marine modules are designed specifically to withstand rugged conditions, high winds, constant vibrations, and extreme temperatures. Siemens Solar modules are manufactured to exacting standards and feature aluminum, corrosion-resistant back panels.

Siemens Solar Industries, based in Camarillo, California, and part of the Siemens Solar Group, is the world's largest manufacturer of solar cells and modules. Siemens Solar sells its products through an international sales network to customers worldwide.
